Towards Living Vertical Cities

Introduction

Better life lured people to migrate from suburban to town. The behavior has been wide spread across the globe, causing slums to emerge in the cities of developing countries due shortage of dwellings for low income citizen. The continuous rise of earth’s population also contribute to dwelling shortage in cities around the world facing authorities with time, especially in the developing countries under new world’s political and economic environment after the last world war. Ever since modern man called homo-sapiens known to born in Africa 170.000 years ago, the earth population is steadily on the rise.

From dawn of civilization, people have occupied islands and continents on ground earth’s surface to create settlements. With the change in time, population grows and their settlements spread, and earth vegetation has been erased from the ground surface. The disintegration of greens from the planet’s ground surface due people migration from rural areas seeking for a better living in bustling cities have caused deforestation took place uncheck. The migration is incited by rapid industrialization taken place since the 2nd world war, under world’s new political and economic environment in various region across the globe.

The trend is continuing, making earth’s natural environment being degraded on ground surface from woodlands to concrete forests. If depletions of earth’s greenery go out of control continuously, the quality of life people living in the newly establish settlements will suffer gradually, and the blue planet’s climate will also aggravate in the long run. That is why an alternative solution to human settlement to accommodate 7 billon people now living on earth’s ground surface must be found. To make matter more seriously, the new lebensraum must include the forthcoming of our children and grand children from heaven to enjoy life granted by God on earth as well.

The same ground earth’s surface is also use for agriculture to produce food for the world population; the more people live on the planet the more land need be allocated for agriculture. Same earth’s ground surface must be maintained for natural forest to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide in the air with photosynthetic process with help of energy from sunlight; the more people and animal live on earth the more land area need be allocated for natural forest. Carbohydrate created by living being in their body by consuming food and oxygen taken from the air by breathing, are the two ingredient needed by all living things to activate every organ in their body from heart to mind. Because this is the way muscles will retrieve back stored sun’s energy to move living things to sustain life on earth.

The Earth’s Surface

Having a planet like a ball with fix diameter, the area of earth’s surface is 510 million square km, and never changes with time. Unfortunately, 70.8% earth’s surface area, or the largest, is covered with water, while 29.2% of its surface area, or the smallest, is land inhabitable to living things. And on latter area now lives human being numbering: 6.912.400.000 people, since April 16, 2011, with population density approaching 14 persons per square kilometer. With world’s birth rate minus death rate remain in positive the blue planet is still expecting more citizens to come from heaven to cramp their predecessors occupying the least earth’s surface in the years to come.

So what should be done to get rid of future inconveniency inhabiting the least earth’s surface? One thing is certain the “paradigm” accepted so far to occupy a piece of land on earth’s surface must be reviewed. Up to now, world’s citizen is entitled by law to own a piece of ground on earth’s surface by purchase, so a developer may build a dwelling for him/her. This politic has lead ground areas around urban environments quickly sold out. To cope with further demand for new settlements, developers are ready to erase woodlands from the suburban environments, if permitted. If an authority of world’s leading country let that happen, other countries will follow suit, and the threat to climate change on earth surface will start ticking.

If we look into the matter inhabiting a planet, what a citizen really want to have on the surface of the earth: is not “a piece of land to wander around”, but “a volume in space to live in”; because human being is a three dimensional being. This is the reason why a paradigm of “surface” must be changed to a paradigm of “space”. Having latter paradigm in place, the upcoming of our children and grand children from heaven to accompany us living on least earth’s surface, will never cramp us anymore in the days to come.

A Simple Arithmetic

If every citizen living on Earth is allocated an apartment measuring: 10 m x 10 m x 10 m, then one million people will occupy a volume of: 10 x 100 x 10 x 100 x 10 x 100 cube meter, which is exactly 1 cube km. The dimension reminds us of a very big building on earth’s surface that can be named: “gigantic building”, or GB for short. If GB can really be built on earth’s surface, this blue planet requires just 6,912 GBs to house all people now inhabiting the earth; and beautifully these GBs or group of GBs will be surrounded by thick tropical or subtropical jungle anywhere around the globe to tame earth’s climate.

Having GBs on earth’s surface, the settlement of 7 billion people on earth will occupy a land of approximately the size of: Palestinian Territories, Bahrain, French’s Wallis and Futuna, all combined. This land area is just a fraction of the least earth’s surface. With such number of GBs on the planet’s surface, scattered across islands and continents in various countries around the globe for human being to settle, vegetation will be able to reclaim back most of least earth’s surface with animals roaming around inside. Both will find the earth’s surface a true heaven to grow and live, because they are living in natural habitat.

To improve earth climate, it is necessary to maintain the continuous improvement of human understanding and activities toward nature that are always progressing. This progress will depend on earth population as well as its spread across countries and within each country around the world. Also progress of the reforestation efforts, the introduction of renewable energy, the application of zero emission transport, etc., the world over in years to come. The closer the earth’s climate came to a projected ideal the better. Probably it takes a century or so to get the earth climate back to the one prescribed for living things on earth.

The giant building may looks like: a cube, or a pyramid, or a dome, or any conceivable three-dimensional form as in Figure-1. In order people be able inhabit such a giant building, it must be equipped with the necessary infrastructures: horizontal and vertical transport system for access to living compartments. Also access to market compartments filled with stores, etc., as well as access to business compartment for: banks, hospitals, entertainments, religious services, social activities, etc. All these compartments have to be tailored to tradition, culture, and religion of each locality in every country. This brings us to the idea the establishment a “vertical city”, shorten VC.

A vertical city is a type of GB new to mankind, but necessary to build to get rid of one aspect of climate change, i.e.: man live in enormous number on the earth’s surface. Due to the limited earth’s surface area on land, and can’t be altered by whatever means, man has to find a way to cope with the ever increasing human population on earth. The solution is to “switch” from inhabiting “horizontal city”, shorten HC, on earth’s surface into accommodating “vertical city”, shorten VC, or GB. In this way people can still enjoy life granted by God on earth comfortably, even with accompany of the upcoming of children and grand children.

VC then become the art of “miniaturization of human settlement”, shorten MHS, to be treated to any populous city across the globe occupying large earth’s surface on land into a “main-stream gigantic building”, shorten MGB. By letting the building to expand freely skyward, the ground surface on land may be relinquished to a mere building foundations, a MGB will come into being to replace populous HC. Vegetation will claim back the liberated ground area to abort the climate change. This is the so called the: “MHS-MGB solution” of human settlement on earth, to put the blue planet’s climate back under control of nature’s wisdom.

The idea behind creating MGB, is the desire to lure people to live in “close proximity” in a giant building established on a foundation, to save the least earth’s surface on land, so natural forest may continuously thrives. With advent MGBs, vegetation may claim back most part of least earth’s surface along with animals wandering around inside, to get rid of the climate change. Climate change will cause temperature on earth’s surface to rise, wind blow strong and wild, and rain falls indiscriminately. Other causes of climate change, such as arising from human daily activities: travelling, farming, mining, manufacturing, etc., must also be treated in similar manner to get rid of each impact on earth’s climate.

MGB is not just an accommodation for people to live, but also a plant to process wastes. Materials brought into the building or taken away by inhabitant the other way round during course of their life: gas, liquid, and solid, will be put under scrutiny so none of them will ever do any harm to either environment: outside and inside the building. All wastes will be processed in a specified plant in the building. Water will be recycled for reuse; shortage of water will be brought in from nearby water resources including clouds. Any solid, liquid, and gas leaving a MGB must be in the form of environmental friendly state or pristine.

MGB will enter world stage under the auspice of United Nation. The giant building will become a mainstream settlement on earth, and be introduced in steps to every country around the world. MGBs will be introduced also to rewrite previous settlements that come of age since the dawn of civilization ever established by man on earth’s surface, occupying fast areas on islands and continents across the globe. Even though MGB will become mainstream, other settlements such the one belong to a variety of indigenous people as world tribes still have the right to exist. So do well to do and rich people who can afford to pay heavy “ground levy” for living on land earth’s surface. Settlements belong to earth’s minority citizens of our blue planet need to be protected as long as they like to do things their ancestor way. But some well to do families and tribe people are likely to join MGB in the future with the change of time and economy.

The rewriting of human settlements of course will exclude ancient heritages, such as: buildings, monuments, statues, etc., which has historical, religious, ethnic, and traditional, values to human civilization: locally, nationally, or internationally, requiring physical restoration. During rewriting of settlements documentation have to be conducted in a variety of medium, to include the “virtual reality” of in cyber space for next generation to see, and stored in cloud computing archive.

With majority population on earth live inhabit MGBs across the globe occupying a small part of least earth’s surface, natural forest in tropical and sub-tropical regions will be able to claim back most of least earth’s surface along with animals wandering around in, one aspect of climate change on earth: people live in billions on its surface will be eliminated. This is a compromise among living things on the blue planet’s surface: human, animals, and vegetation; to allow earth’s climate back under the control of nature’s wisdom in years to come.

MGB will get energy from various sources. Heat comes from burning methane derived from the processing of waste, or flammable material. Electricity comes from solar panels put around the giant building, and wind farm on the building top. Emergency power comes from battery installations feed by solar panels. Electricity is used for: lighting, heating, cooling, computer, communication, internet, information technology, data processing, security, games, alarm, entertainment, etc. MGB is also built as intelligent building delivering not merely comfortable accommodations for people to live per se, but also security and safety as well.

The Vertical City

The vertical city design of requires the participation of international organization belong to United Nation. Among some information need be provided by this organization are: building design, selection of location, earth’s geological activities, building construction, even building maintenance and operation as well. A pool of experts in UN organization will accumulate the necessary information pertinent to construction of MGB on earth’s surface. High learning institutes, various industries, and reports on earth’s geology, are some important contributors of science and technology for the establishment of a vertical city on earth to tame the threat of climate change.

To cope with number of people inhabiting a city in of a country across the globe, a MGB suppose to rewrite a city come of age, must be classified into some categories, like: large, medium, and small. A vertical city accommodating: say a million people accordingly may be termed: large vertical city, abbreviated LVC. The one accommodating say: 500.000 people may be termed: medium vertical city, shorten MVC. While the one accommodating say: 250.000 people be termed: small vertical city, shorten SVC. In real life the classification may be more than three, but for sake of this proposal category in excess than three will not be considered.

Such a categorization of course will bring number of MGBs on the blue planet’s surface to increase, so do the total earth’s surface on land they occupy on least earth’s surface. This is a logic consequence of categorization putting limit to vertical city’s capacity to accommodate people. One must bear in mind that a vertical city is established to rewrite (replace) settlements with dwellings that have come of age including cities. With demolition of dilapidated dwellings and remove ruins, a variety of new plants may be introduced to the liberated ground surface of the previous settlements or cities.

Planning a Vertical City

The construction of a vertical city commence not in the real world, but in the imaginary world of virtual reality. A computer’s aided design software, or CAD-VC software, must first be developed to build MGB in a digital computer. The work begins by choosing a variety living compartments pertinent to a city undergoing rewriting in a country, tailored to tradition, culture, and faith of an ethnicity.

Once a set of living compartment are found, work then proceeds with market compartments for stores, etc.; business compartments for offices, bank, etc.; social compartments for hospital, entertainment, religious services; and others. These compartments are tailored to mimic a city undergoing rewriting. Then the work continues with the provision of horizontal and vertical infrastructures, so access to every compartment where people live or have business and social activities are available.

The following step is to design a “city’s base” or a “city floor”, where individual and social compartments along with their infrastructures, etc., come together to form a human settlement much like a honeycomb in the community of bees. A honeycomb built for human community may be called: “humancomb”. The city base or city floor also acts as conduits for: water, electricity, air condition, gas, sanitation, waste channel, information technology, etc., to every compartment in the vertical city.

Such a humancomb will remind a “computer’s motherboard” where components on the board are fed by printed electronic circuitry from its bottom, leading to the introduction of another terminology: a vertical city’s motherboard, abbreviated: vcboard”. On top of such vcboard there are: compartments, infrastructures, etc., be accompanied with circuitry of: water, electricity, air condition, gas, sanitation, waste, information technology, etc., from inside of the base or floor. The vcboard is established imitating a city undergoing a rewriting, tailored to tradition, culture, religion, ethnic of every locality; to emulate world’s city coming of age needing a rewriting in any country across the globe.

To establish a vertical city such as MGB including categories like: LVC, MVC, and SVC, a number of vcboard are stacked up to form a giant building. Before a construction begins, a public hearing must be held in the city being rewritten for community acceptance. This is necessary to find out if there are any objections from the people. Since MGB is mainly built to rewrite cities coming of age and will be equipped with waste processing plant of all sort, so there are no waste of any kind will ever leave the vertical city to harm the environment.

As soon as a number of vcboards been stacked up, the next step is to design vertical city’s support structures along with its foundation, where all afore said weight will be transferred to the earth’s surface. Various support structure technologies will be developed to put the vcboards afloat in the air backed by waste treatment plant to safeguard the environment. In this way, any city coming of age with dilapidated buildings occupying large area on land anywhere in the world on least earth’s surface, may be easily converted to MGB to allow vegetation claim back the liberated land, to let the earth’s climate firmly back under the control of nature’s wisdom.

Building a Vertical City

A vertical city will be established in real world after it has been thoroughly studied in virtual reality. Modular design will be applied to build a vertical city, and the giant building in virtual world will be sliced into a variety of block called: “gigantic building block”, shorten GBB, by CAD software. Each GBB piece will be forwarded to computer’s aided manufacturing software, or CAM software, for manufacturing.

The GBB components are then gathered on manufacturer stockyard. An “airborne heavy lift”, called: “ultra” will ferry each GBB from manufacturer stockyard http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifanywhere in the region to site stockyard. Ultra also help the erection of a vertical city on site from the foundation up with “modular construction technology” shorten MCT, until MGB is fully erected. During period of design, a number of “virtual citizens” with a set of rules and behavior introduced into the virtual building to imitate real citizens living in a vertical city. A study may be conducted in this way to find out how such a huge dwelling will influence people behavior in real world. How a citizen will interacts with one other, what human traffic and vehicle traffic are like in such a MGB, etc. Such study are carried out to make sure that unwanted event will ever to happen, also to hinder the occurrence of violence, etc.

Other tests to be carried in the building established in virtual world are: fire, storm, earthquake, temperature variation, viral attack, terror, and other crises may happen in such huge building. A security team will provide programs for the safety of people living in a vertical city, and left no stone unturned in their effort. After the test and security program have passed, the manufacturing of GBB begin and the physical construction of a vertical city will follow suit. The design of GBB also takes into consideration standardization to allow building components are competitive in design as well as in price in the market place.

A vertical city models are also built to provide some tangible building in real world, so a variety unseen factors of the world of virtual reality can be unveiled with ease. Such scale models are also built to represents MCT being implemented to each MGB established around the world prior erection. With the aid of such physical models, the effect of: earthquake, storm, etc., may be investigated.

Instead classifying a MGB with number of citizen it can accommodate in coastal region of the world, a vertical city may be classified to follow skyline introduced by nature in mountainous region of this blue planet. According to skyline familiar to human eye in mountainous region since ancient times are: mountain line, hill line, and dune line. The skylines can go still further with others, but for this proposal they are limited to three. Therefore MGB may also be classified into: mountain settlement, hill settlement, and dune settlement, because each of them is following the skyline of a mountain, a hill, and a dune.

1. A Mountain Settlement

According to this proposal, it will be the largest human settlement ever established by man on earth, called: a mountain settlement. It will accommodate approximately 1.000.000 citizens, and follow the skyline of a mountain. If a MGB is establish on a horizontal land surface. The skyline will truly follow a mountain skyline, stand upright, an indication of stability. The bulge surface of mountain settlement may be converted to some sort of farm to cultivate crops or harness energy from the sun. A waste treatment plants will become part of a mountain settlement protecting the earth’s environment.

2. A Hill Settlement

This is a medium human settlement after a mountain settlement, called: a hill settlement. It will accommodate approximately 500.000 citizens will follow the skyline of a hill. If the building is establish on horizontal ground surface, it will follow the skyline of a hill, stand upright, and stable. Like a mountain settlement the bulge surface may be converted to some sort a farm to cultivate crops or to harness energy from the sun. A waste treatment plant will become part of a hill settlement to get rid of pollution on earth’s environment.

3. A Dune Settlement

This is the smallest human settlement of the three called: a dune settlement. If the building is establish on a horizontal ground, the skyline will follow a dune, stand upright, and stable. A dune settlement which is also a swelling up ground on a horizontal ground surface, will accommodate approximately 250.000 citizens. It can cover large area on earth’s surface, but the bulge of the dune can be converted to a farmland to cultivate crops or harness energy from the sun. A waste treatment plant is also part of a dune settlement to get rid of pollution being released to the environment.

Blend In With Nature

1. A Surface Settlement

A surface settlement is termed to buildings and structures establish primarily on horizontal ground surface in lowlands, such as: along river banks, or along the coasts of the sea, or around river’s estuaries, since the dawn of civilization. Same surface settlements are also established on highlands mostly along river banks and its estuaries. In surface settlement most building foundation is built right from the ground surface, and which is why the city mostly occupied by single floor dwellings and will spread quickly as the population grows.

With birth rate minus death rate remain in positive, the world’s population is expected to rise with time continuously, and woodlands on least earth’s surface will surely be converted to concrete forest to house the upcoming citizen; and deforestation of earth’s natural vegetation still goes unabated.

Mountain dwellings, hill dwelling, and dune dwelling, are group of vertical settlements on earth’s surface use to conserve land area on least earth’s surface with increase earth’s population. Such a settlement can be erected on lowlands as well as highlands along river banks and sea coasts, much like the previous human settlement, but will occupy less land area on least earth’s surface. This because vertical settlement, shorten VS, expands mainly skyward, while the horizontal settlement, shorten HS, spreads mainly sideward and the earlier will become future solution of human settlement on this blue planet.

With the change of paradigm from: “surface” to “space”, the rewriting of human settlement on earth’s surface across the globe will lean toward vertical settlement occupying small portion of least earth’s surface, to enable vegetation and animal claim back the larger portion of it in order to tame the earth’s climate.

2. A Blend in Settlement.

The shortcoming of a surface settlement, it can be erected only on level grounds on least earth’s surface which is limited on some regions on this planet. On the contrary, vertical settlement has the capability to blend in with nature. Such blend in with nature will enable vertical settlement be established on: hilly, rocky, mountainous, etc., regions. This will enable vertical settlement gets a protection such as from weather, or natural catastrophe like earthquake for the stability of foundation on the ground. The blend in settlement also offer beautiful panorama of natural surroundings.

3. A Mixed Settlement

This is a combination of surface settlement with blend in settlement to rewrite previous settlement that has come of age in future. The aim of a mixed settlement is not limited to tame the earth climate per se, but also to make the blue planet: a true heaven to live, a gorgeous place to live, a pristine environment to live, and a climate of the natural wisdom to live. The target of mixed settlement: adhere to nature, with blue sky above, green environment around, and pristine water below.

Strive For Lebensraum

Life is relentless strive for lebensraum displayed by living things. When human being is separated from apes, then came down the tree to live in cave, then out to plains get in touch with earth’s surface. That was the taste of lebensraum ever indulged by human being.

Ever since human population grows, societies developed, clans emerged, religions surface, tribal lives introduced, nations appear along with trading and industrialization came into being. Competition among countries arises about a variety of things for many reasons along the passage of time leading wars to explode in the course of human existence on earth. World War II was the last attempt of man in a society to explore lebensraum the conventional way on earth.

Now with the least earth’s surface has been divided into different countries, small and weak countries get under the umbrella of the stronger, border establish around each and every country with patrol alert in 24 hours, and countries become member of United Nations, there is no room to explore a new lebensraum by waging wars. Should a country dare to attempt it will be costly, the intruder will be swallowed right away, and be sent into history book.

The only way left now to explore a new lebensraum is to go skyward. Pursuing such an endeavor all countries the world over will face same common enemy: overcoming earth’s gravitational force. To conquer this force, an airborne heavy lift helicopter called: ultra must be built. With ultra, variety vertical cities can be established by a government of any country anywhere in the world for its citizens to live with their upcoming children and grand children within its own territory safe and sound.

With the establishment mixed settlement on earth, the blue planet’s climate will be guided by nature’s wisdom. Mankind will then have ample time to explore the next lebensraum: to live on the surfaces of the planets belong to the solar system. An effective trans-planet transport must be developed to ferry people and material to the new lebensraum, but first mankind has to operate a nuclear powered ultra flying years without refueling here on earth to gain knowledge and the required experience.

Earth Simulation
Simulation earth’s surface is an important tool to get to know what is done and the result that come out. With simulation technology the earth’s surface will be monitored and controlled continuously during the process of rewriting of settlement around the world. Simulation also gives feedback on the intervention of nature’s wisdom to gradual change of the earth’s climate. With earth’s simulation, a thorough study of the effect of human activities on earth from: living in billions, traveling, manufacturing, mining, etc., influencing the earth’s climate may be made.
